My Current Computer and Hard Drive Set-up:
Dell Studio XPS 1650 laptop– When I was teaching, I had a MacBook Pro laptop. I loved Macs. I cut my teeth on Macs. When I started with Photoshop, Mac’s were THE computer for graphic designers and photographers. But competition was vigorous and by the time I was retiring from teaching, the extra cost of a MacBook Pro plus all the attending software seemed prohibitive. I researched extensively the best Windows version laptop that would be Photoshop and Photography worthy. This Dell Studio XPS 1650 got the best reviews for color fidelity as well as performance. At the time of this Dell purchase I also had a desktop computer station that I was syncing files with the laptop. I have since gotten rid of the desktop station and just have the laptop. It is easier to keep track of files with just a laptop, instead of going back and forth between Adobe Lightoom setups. This laptop was bought in 2009 and now in 2012 it is still running strong. I have upgraded my RAM to 16 GBs and am running Photoshop Cs6. I am sure there are faster processors out there now, but for now I am still satisfied with the performance I am getting. After calibrating my monitor with an Eye One Spyder, the printed images are really stunning. When I have had some hardware or software issues, I have to say that the Dell customer service has been outstanding and prompt, with follow up calls to see if everything is satisfactory. Overall, I have been satisfied with the XPS 1650 and will most likely see what is new in Dell’s inventory when I go to purchase another laptop in the next year or two.
1 Terabyte Seagate External Hard Drive– I really like the size and portability of this external hard drive. It connects with to the computer through a USB port. There is no need for another external power source. It comes with a rugged carrying case. I store all my images and information on this external and not on my computer hard drive. I make a second copy to the 500 GB Seagate External Hard drive.
500 GB Seagate External Hard Drive- This is my one of my oldest hard drives, yet it is still running strong with no problems. The only thing I don’t really like is that it needs an external power source, a problem sometimes when I am traveling and editing out of my car. I also use this external drive to save my hard drive back ups.
