Using Photoshop to Create an Illustration
-from an original photograph, using only Photoshop without any Third Party plugins-
Below you will see the finished image using Photoshop to create an illustration. There were no third party plugins used, only Photoshop filters. I took the original photograph, but felt that I needed to create something more unique. I had seen many photographs of Loons and this original needed something more. I started playing around in Photoshop and came up with this fairly simple technique. I used only Photoshop’s “”Find Edge” filter and layer masks. Using this technique, you can create similar images with any version of Photoshop. You do not need Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 or even Adobe Photoshop CS6 for this demonstration to work. In this case, I used this Illustration to make a set of four Loon cards, each displaying different loon behaviors. I also used this Illustration for my Business Card logo and any of my Business correspondence. So, when you think an image is failing you, try exploring ways to make the image unique and personal. You never know what you will create.
Here is the original image from which the Illustration was created:
You can see that the original image is lacking any eye catching quality. The lighting is flat, though the composition with the Mother Loon with a chick on her back has some potential. I started searching around for a way to save this image and stumbled on the Illustration technique. It is always good to play around in Photoshop, especially if you have an image that you want to salvage, or in which you can envision some potential.
Here is a video explaining how I created the Illustration using only Photoshop without using any other third party plugins.
